About a week ago, I took that Bluenote Japan DVD from EZT to show it one of the jazz studies teachers at a college I used to go to. During the viewing experience, we were talking about how much a stud Chick was. My teacher then exclaimed that he was a hell of a drummer too. I've heard he played before, but I've never seen or heard him.
Anyone got anything with Chick playing drums?

I think he wanted to be a drummer originally but he got a few gigs on piano and the rest is history.

I don't have it on CD, but if anyone can post that track, you'll see what a beautiful kit player Chick was,and really loose too. Michael Brecker would also surprise you on the drums....

Nice. Not easy to duet with a sax.
Chick is extremely talented. He started off as a drummer. He also plays mallet percs. Check the Change CD where he's on marimba.
Steve Gadd once said in Up Close:
"Another person who was a big influence to me, who when I saw him play I started to understand a lot of things that I heard Tony do on records that were so beautiful, and simple, but real hard to figure out, that person was Chick Corea, who has a real nice time on the drums."
...and what about Gary Husband on piano.

Jaco was a tasty drummer too.
Dave Liebman is another one of those sick individuals who can sit down and play some pretty nasty shit on the kit. But don't let him play on yours, he'll tear it up, literally.
Anyone ever hear Jack DeJohnette play piano? That was his first instrument.
Oh yeah, and Steve Gadd can play some pretty good piano as well. Actually, a lot of great Jazz musicians play a very good second and sometimes third instrument. Elvin Jones played guitar rather well too. Joe Henderson related that to me when I told him I was dabling in guitar. He said it's always good for a drummer to get into a chordal/melodic instrument. It helps you think in those terms when you play drums rather than strictly rhythmic. It's very true; my having learned guitar and having a functional knowledge of keyboards has been very instrumental (no pun) in making me a more musical drummer.
Bandleaders who also play drums have a flair to choose their drummers and bring the best out of them.
Think Gino Vanelli and Chick Corea, for examples.
